Davit Installation on a Ocean Alexander 510Lifting the dinghy to a safe cradle can be difficult if not properly planned. The crane must lift the dinghy from its chocks, clear safety rails and the decks below in an ever-changing environment. The angle between davit and dinghy changes as the dinghy gets higher; safety rails must be cleared not only by the dinghy as it pivots toward the water, but the rotating davit motor at the base must also avoid stanchions and fiberglass built-in seating. Planning is considerable - it does no good to drill a hole and then find the dinghy hits the side of the boat on the way to the water! Force exerted by the weight of the dinghy extended on the davit arm will influence trim of the yacht as it is raised or lowered into the water, creating yet another factor to consider. Mechanical considerations aside, this crane must look as pretty as possible, so as not to detract from the yacht's appearance. Also important is potential obstruction on the lower deck, influencing doors, walkways, entertainment areas and windows, especially when a critical view might be compromised. The before and after photos demonstrate a talent in engineering, mechanical skills and finish work of which we are quite proud!
